During the four historical periods, the principle of putting the people first has reflected the distinct themes of the times and has been developing and evolving successively. In the period of the new democratic revolution, the theme is to completely reverse the tragic fate of the Chinese people being bullied and subjected to oppression and achieve people’s freedom and liberation. In the period of socialist revolution and construction, the theme is to realize that the people are the masters of the country, work for the interests of the people, and continuously improve their living standards. In the new period of reform, opening up and socialist modernization construction, the theme is to build a moderately prosperous society and meet the growing material and cultural needs of the people. In the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the theme is to adhere to putting the people at the center, meet the needs of the people for a better life, and gradually achieve common prosperity for all. The report to the 20th National Congress of the CPC first proposed the worldview and methodology contained in Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, summarized its stances, viewpoints and methods, and put “must put the people first” at the top of the “six musts”. The principle of putting the people first is a rigorous, logical, and profound theoretical system with rich and profound implication of the times. Key Words: Communist Party of China; Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era; putting the people first; common prosperity
