Targeting on urbanization and urban modernization, the CELAP Smart City Lab was co-established by CELAP and IBM to seek a sustainable way in city’s development under the guidance of science. It collects latest information on urbanization from home and abroad to introduce new concepts, methods and technologies in the city’s construction and management. 

It usually takes three hours each time for the lab to conduct case studies and presentations as well as interactive discussions among the participants.

Teachers clarify the definition and characteristics of smart city by briefing the utilization of sensors of information and Internet in the construction of intelligent cities. They also establish a database that involves areas of smart government, smart manufacturing, smart grid, and smart medical service. Resorting to the demonstration system developed by IBM, Sun3D and other cooperative partners, the lab can offer participants three-dimensional plans on the construction of smart city. Such kind of cases includes Economic Co-operation Platform in Virginia Sate, Online Business License Management of New York, Intelligent System of Water Management, Optimized Contingency Plan and Safe City. Besides, the lab also gathers the examples of Shanghai Expo, and practices of other cities in the building of smart cities.

The lab trains about 1,200 students annually, who are mainly leading officials from around the nation. China has entered a period of rapid urbanization, which in return serves a major engine to the nation’s economic and social development. As a result, the Smart City Lab will play a key role in CELAP’s training of urbanization and urban modernization.
